The growing numbers of the annual June 3 pilgrims to the Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo should be exploited to transform the destination into one of the premier tourism sites in the world, Uganda's Vice President Mr. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi said on June 3,2013.
Speaking after the service attended by tens of thousands of believers from Uganda and neighbouring countries like DR Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Southern Sudan among others, the Vice President said like the Holy places in Jerusalem and the Vatican, Namugongo has a potential to become an international tourism attraction throughout the year.
He implored the care takers of the shrines and the Kira Urban authority Town authority to improve the social amenities and scale up investments in the hospitality industry. He also argued the planners to improve the Uganda Martyrs trail and train guides as well as branding the various spots along the Martyrs trail for the Christians to visit before the grand mass at the main shrines.
Stake holders from the Tourism Fraternity including the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Tourism Board among others staged exhibitions showcasing the country are other tourism attractions.
