Hundreds of conservationists, tourism promoters and partners on Friday July 26 congregated at the Uganda Wildlife Authority head office, Plot 7 Kira Road to join the management and staff in celebrating the Chief Conservation Area Manager (CCAM) Mr. Charles Tumwesigye's award for leadership in conservation.
Mr. Tumwesigye is the 2013 winner of the National Geographic Society Buffet award for Leadership in conservation .He received the award in Washington DC in June 2013.To celebrate this landmark achievement, the management of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) organised a cocktail in his honour at which the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) Dr. Maria Mutagamba was the chief guest.
The cocktail was also graced by the Permanent Secretary MTWA, Ambassador Patrick Mugoya, the chairman UWA Board of Trustees Mr. Benjamin Otto, heads of government agencies, honorary tourism officers.
The minister congratulated the CCAM upon his lifetime achievement and challenged the staff to emulate Tumwesigye's legacy. She said the fact that Tumwesigye and his predecessor Mr. John Makombo won the award shows the organization is pursuing the right strategies in conservation. She was also happy that such international mentions further enhance the global recognition of Uganda as premier tourism destination.
The chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. Otto promised that all staff who win such accolades thereby bringing honour to UWA will be recognized in a special manner.
Mr. Tumwesigye outlined his conservation history as a warden Monitoring and Research, Chief Park warden Kibale, Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Parks as well his involvement with the Batwa communities to improve their livelihoods.
