Vision, Mission & Core Values

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) was established in August 1996 by the Uganda Wildlife Statute, which merged the Uganda National Parks and the Game Department. It is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by minister responsible for wildlife. UWA is in charge of management of 10 National Parks, 12 Wildlife Reserves, 14 Wildlife Sanctuaries and provides guidance for 5 Community Wildlife Areas.

To be a leading self-sustaining wildlife conservation agency that transforms Uganda into one of the best eco-tourist destinations in Africa.

Organisational Mission:

To conserve, economically develop and sustainably manage the wildlife and Protected Areas of Uganda in partnership with neighboring communities and other stakeholders for the benefit of the people of Uganda and the global community

1.    Conserving the PA network and its associated landscapes in order to enhance their social, economic and environmental benefits and values.

2.    Maintenance of biodiversity representation, ecosystem integrity to ensure their continued natural processes and functioning for the benefit of the present and future generations.

3.    Enhancing Community benefits from wildlife conservation and PA management.

4.    Promotion of sustainable development based on sound conservation practices.

5.    Integrating culture and indigenous knowledge into conservation of natural resources and PA management.

6.    Building relationships and good will among partners and stakeholders to enhance UWA’s efforts to achieve its mission.

Restoration and management of wildlife and conservation areas together with the revitalisation of the tourism sector is a priority area for the Government of Uganda, which contributes towards the national economic development and poverty eradication. UWA has contributed to this program through investing in Protected Area (PA) management and sustainable utilisation of wildlife resources. This has resulted in increased benefits to the surrounding local communities and a growing tourism sector.
