If planning to summit Mt Elgon, warm clothing and a decent 4-season sleeping bag are essential – it gets cold at the top! A good raincoat and waterproof overtrousers are also necessary. Bring plastic bags to separate wet and dry clothing in your rucksack and plenty of snacks and sweets. Tents, camping mats, and other essential climbing gear can be hired with prior arrangements.

Community support staff (porters) are available to carry the hiker’s luggage at a set fee, up to a maximum of 18kg.

Most hikers wear walking boots and these are essential for the peaks. However, for general walking sturdy shoes are fine.
